I am looking at these two tractors and am hoping I might be able to get a little buying assistance as this will be my first tractor. I've read through the forum and you folks are always so helpful with these kind of q's I thought I'd give it a try. Don't have serial numbers for these guys but here are the other specs.
B7200DT, 807 hrs, 1986 mfg, kubota loader, ROPS, 9 body, $6500
B6200HSD, 864 hrs, 1987 mfg, new SMC loader, 9 body, no ROPS $6500
This will be my first tractor and I know I want the ROPS so I'd have to have the dealer add that to the B6200. My uses are mostly mowing, some earth moving. Does the extra hp make that much difference here? Since I'm a new tractor owner will the hydro be a better choice? These prices are the going rate for the B6xxx and B7xxx series in my area. Thanks!

Hi fossil,
I used a Bolens hydro garden tractor to mow 3 acres for about 4 seasons, and I just purchased my first gear drive Kubota. Having had both, I favor the hydro ever so slightly over the gear when mowing, easpecially when it comes to obstacles such as trees and bushes.However,if your land is relatively open as mine is, I'd go for the extra horsepower and consider the 7200.

When I bought my first orange, a B5200DT, I bought it with a 3pt finish deck. Why the gear shift... we had some serious issues with hydrostatics at the time, and we really did not trust them very much. I learned to mow the lawns with the gear shift oramge...like any other 3pt deck, it is something to get used to. However, the HST affords you a luxury that the gear does not, the ability to keep the engine revs AND the deck / PTO revs at operating speed.
With the gear shift units, you lose your rear PTO as you dump your clutch pedal to change gear directions, unless it is equipped with a two stage as larger units are. If you maintain the operating speed, when you start off again, you'll typically get a real jerky, hard engagement of the PTO drive as you start off.
As John pointed out, if you have wide open mowing coverage, then you really won't have a problem. I still cut in tight areas with my B5200DT and 3pt deck and FEL on it. However, if your yard to be mowed is disciplined with many turns and trees (obstacles in general), you'll be forever trying to change gears and mow. This is when a HST will certainly outperform a gear, for manueverability.
